The line cliché holds one chord for four bars but moves a single voice down by half steps (C, B, Bb, A in C minor), which gives a static harmony a sense of motion. It’s heard in the A sections of minor-key ballads, and in film and pop songs. Practice voicing it with the moving line on top, and listen for it in the bass, where players often put it instead.

None of the usual substitutions apply: there are no dominant 7ths to replace and no whole steps to fill.
